SAINT FRANCIS XAVIER GRADUATION - JUNE 2011

Dr. Ernest Garnier

Our Guest Speaker this year was Dr. Ernest Garnier, class of June 1988.  After graduating from our school Ernest attended Xavier High School in Manhattan and went on to Columbia University.  He then did his residency at SUNY Downstate.

Dr. Garnier’s remarks were very personal and much appreciated by both graduates and all in attendance.  In his opening remarks he spoke of the sacrifices made by his parents who emigrated to the U.S. from Haiti to give Ernest and his brother better opportunities for them to realize their dreams.  Ernest learned at an early age that success is only achieved with sacrifice and hard work and still believes that today.  He told the graduates that there are no short cuts to success, when you know what you want to achieve, make a plan and follow it and you will accomplish your goals.  There will be obstacles along the way, you will be told that you can’t do this or that but you have to persevere and you will accomplish your goals.  Success involves sacrifice, setting goals and service.

Ernest also asked the graduates to take some time away from twitter, face book, Xbox, etc., and spend these extra hours working on being a better person. Set goals, and dream big dreams and use your God given talents to serve others. Ernest went on to say that service is at the heart of a Christian education and makes us spiritually whole.  What we sow in one season we reap in the next.
When we serve we realize how many blessings we have received, and Ernest knows this first hand when he volunteered to go to Haiti, after their earthquake, to serve the Haitian people.  After seeing these devastated people left with nothing and how strong they were in faith and hope, Ernest realized why we all have to give back after been given so much.  He wished all the graduates much success on their journey.

Peter Castro of People Magazine Speaks to Graduating Class of 2010

On Friday, May 7th, Peter Castro, the Deputy Managing Editor of People magazine, visited his alma mater, St. Francis Xavier School, to speak to the graduating class of 2010.

Peter began as a writer for People in 1987.  In 2001 he was named Assistant Managing Editor.  In 2004, he edited the first Emmy editions of People magazine's Hollywood Daily.  He has also provided pop culture commentary on many TV shows such as Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, Extra, CNN's Larry King Live, Good Morning America, Dateline NBC, Today Show, and E!'s Red Carpet pre-show.

The purpose of Mr. Castro's visit was to introduce himself to students since he will be the guest speaker at their graduation ceremony on June 11th,  Peter credits his success to the encouragement and work ethic of his parents and the wonderful education he received at St. Francis Xavier, Xaverian High School, and NYU.

In speaking to the students, Peter explained that he works very hard but enjoys every minute of his work.  He inspired the students to study hard and to pursue careers related to what they love to do.

A Graduate Speaks to the Graduates

Karen Gurl, a 1977 graduate from Saint Francis Xavier School, is now a successful business woman having started her own technology company.  Three of her classmates from Saint Francis have been with her from the very beginning.  So many friendships have been formed here at Saint Francis Xavier and have lasted over the years.

Karen was the guest speaker at our Graduation Ceremony in June of 2008. During her talk, she encouraged the students to work hard, listen to their teachers and put into practice all they have learned.  “Life is not easy.  Anything worth while,” she told them, “is only achieved by hard work, and hard work is what leads to success.”

The Graduates listened and took away Karen's words of wisdom.  We hope they will succeed the way Karen did.  We are so proud of Karen and all she has achieved!

The Franciscan Brother of Brooklyn Celebrate 150 Years

As the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn, celebrate their 150th Anniversary, the parishioners of St. Francis Xavier Parish and the graduates of St. Francis Xavier School recall with gratitude the fact that for just about half of those years we were blessed by their presence in the parish and school.  The Brothers are an important part of our history and of who we are today.

A Mass was celebrated here in their honor on June 27th as we prayed for all the Brothers, especially those who served at Saint Francis.  Eight of the Brothers were present including Brothers Damien, Edward Bacon, Thomas Grady, Becket Ryan, Thomas Barton, Xavier Castaldo, Jeremy, and Campion.

We are truly grateful for the Brothers many years of dedicated service.

At the Mass, they were presented with a plaque as a small reminder of our deep gratitude.
