Joseph Vacante My name is Joseph Vacante. I
attended St. Francis Xavier (Class of 1980).
Had a very nice time at the 95th Anniversary! Met John
Carlin and Tom Moger. Great school; great parish. Sr.
Kathleen and staff are doing a wonderful job. The school needs
our support. Even the smallest amount will be appreciated.
Would love to hear from any school mates or neighborhood 'kids'.
I lived at 474 Third Street between 6 and 7th Avenues. Married a
girl from Fourth St (42 years ago!). God bless.

I was a student at SFX from 1st grade until we moved in 7th. However in my heart, SFX was my school. Would have been in the Class of '75. What wonderful memories I have thinking of Elizabeth, Jackie, Antonietta and Vera. Walking home for lunch, double-dutch in the school yard, Miss Spletzer, Br. Joel's music class (I think I still have that recorder) and Mrs. Blumetti. God Bless!

Thanks to all of the great teachers who made SFX the incredible school that it was for the alumni... and for it's students today. The postings tell part of a rich story, one of a touch stone school in Park Slope where kids learned life lessons of faith, respect, friendship, tolerance, diligence, perseverance and pride. Sr. Kathleen, nothing but thanks for all you've done through the years. Many thanks to Sr. Helene, Mr. Griesbach, Sr. Veronica, Sr. Claire Vincent, Bro. Gerald, Bro. Patrick, Bro. Edward, Fr. Ron, Bro. Becket, Bro. Joel, Sr. Anne, Ms. Petterino, Mr. Ed, Mrs. Blumetti, Mrs. Gay, Miss Spletzer, and the nun who came over to console me in the auditorium on my first day of school and asked what my name was. Nina Mineri, I remember you and your smile, you were in my sister's class. Hey, James Kelly: the Maceda's moved to Florida. Dennis Crowley, how I miss your family, love to your parents Millie & Tom. Vinny Castagna, Gary Gonzales, Joey Altieri, Leslie Grant, Cookie Colgan, Kevin Fiore were in my graduating class. Good memories, lots of smiles.

I had many good years and great memories at Saint Francis. I was the last of six Castagna's to pass through Saint Francis.
I can remember great classmates like Gary Gonzales, Joey
Altieri, Leslie Grant and Cookie Colgan, I can go on and on.
I have been attending the Caroll Street stickball reunion
held in September and never run into my old classmates.
I hear there will be a reunion at SFX in May which would be
great to attend. Anyone who would like to reach out, it
would be great to hear from you.

Hi,
I lived
on President Street with my parents and 3 (Louise, Jennifer
and Jacqueline) sisters and 1 brother(Vincent or Jimmy).
I loved SFX and the Alumni. I was one of of the
original Alumni members. I remember Fr. Ron and
Brother Ed and Sister Helene and all the fun we had putting
on the plays and going to Clove Lake. We enjoyed
listening to Neil DeSimone playing the guitar and singing
along... I miss the good old days of innocence and youth.
I wouldn't trade my childhood for anything in the world.

My name is Virginia
(Ginny James) O'Leary and I graduated from SFX in 1955, after coming
in the 6B.
My first teacher was Sr. Mary Cornelius and she soon became a friend of my family. SFX changed my life in so many wonderful ways. I was welcomed by my classmates and am still in touch with one of them, Claire McDonnell Richardson. But I remember Joanne Giordano and Ann Paula Zero, the smartest girls in our class and then there were Ellen Riley (who passed away several years ago) and Josephine Stucchio, Ann Marie Scioli and so many other wonderful girls, who I am sure became wonderful women. While I learned a great deal academically, I also learned about compassion and community at SFX, life lessons that have remained with me thru the years.
My family lived at 154 Garfield Place. The first time I went back to see where I grew up, I cried tears of happiness and loss. Grateful for the happy memories, but missing all those I loved so much.
I will always be a "Brooklyn girl" (now living in Bayside, NY), and will always be grateful for my days at SFX.
Take care, Ginny James O'Leary

Brother Cyprian, Brother Corsini, and especially Brother Amadeus were a great influence on me. I had a wonderful time being a part of the alumni association in its infancy. I Googled myself and found a post from this site by Judy Sainato, my best friend, who moved to Long Island in 5th (?) grade. St. Francis was a transformative experience. I think of those days often and fondly. I remember Sr. Helene from 6th grade, Miss Pettorino, Miss Geney (sp?) from third grade, Sr. Olympia from first grade, and who remembers Sr. Josephine Louise (a/k/a Sr. Pruneface?) Those were some of the best times in my life. I am now a high school guidance counselor in Massachusetts and have two kids in their early twenties and a great husband. I would be so very happy to hear from anyone from that time!

SFX was the best! 1st Grade was the best with Ms. Nikki. In the morning she would let me visit the other first grade teacher, Ms. Virginia, and we would say hi. 2nd Grade was great!! We had so much fun with Ms. Murphy. If some of us didn't attend the special classes, we would have our own pocket with books, but we would not know which book she chooses. Sometimes I want to see another great book so bad I will try to speed through the book, but then I miss the fun. Then we write about so we can remember it always. Ms. Murphy is such a great teacher. Now I'm in 3rd Grade, with Ms. Carney. I have so much fun with all my friends. Ms. Carney always makes learning fun; you can never have a bad day. And I finally attend a special class with the school counselor, Ms. A, where we learn how to cooperate with our classmates. I will always remember Ms. Carney. I'll tell you another story when I reach 4th grade! Zoe Roberts 3rd Grade, Ms. Carney. Peace and Love Sister Kathleen! And hi to Staff: Ms. Negron, Ms. Fialo, Ms. O'Connell, Ms. Paseon (I think that's how you spell it.) And others.
To Sister Kathleen, "You taught us how to respect each other, how to serve God. And without you it wouldn't feel right. You taught us to put others before ourselves. Even if you're mad, don't throw it on people. You told us that without a smile we're nothing, and to always do what is good. You made SFX the best. Thank you Sister Kathleen. Love, Zoe

WOW! This is amazing, my Aunt Angela sent this link to me and I could not pass up this opportunity to say something to everyone that helped make a difference in my life then and now. To Father Brown: What can I say other then, you help make me take things and my work serious and found the love I truly have for math (I will never forget your pointer stick that kept me focused, laughing, I love you dearly!) Sister Margaret & Kathleen: You two incredible women not only helped me a new student coming in but my Aunt Angela with the help she needed to get through having a teenager.. Your dedication to myself and her are forever grateful and never will be forgotten, I hold you dear in my heart. Brother Andre': To you I have to say that you were and are the coolest person I know, your smile and your love for us children will never be forgot, and I am glad that you found my present after I left, I wanted to give you something more to express my gratitude to what you meant to me and I only had a set amount of money to shop, I hope you understand, I was embarrassed but as a women know wish I was there to hung you and thank you for who you are and what you met deep down to me! To all the other teachers I will never forget SFX it was an amazing experience that stays with me forever and am glad that I was a part of it, even if it was for a little while! To my group of friends: well should I say grebils as Aunt Angela & Uncle Alex would calls: Craig Musco, Ursula Colon, Shannon Waters, Marico etc... I still have wonderful memories of Saint Francis Xavier . One of my favorite teachers was Sister Rosemary. Because of her, I discovered the 'Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe'. When the book became a movie, I instantly thought of her. Thank you Sister Rose. And to Sister Kathleen, who never had to use her paddle on me, but kept it as a reminder to all us kids .... thank you for caring and keeping such a great school and community together. Lorraine

I don't know why, but I started thinking about my school the other night and thought I would look it up. My family and I where one of the first Cuban families in this school. To me this school was my family. My home life was less then perfect, so I was in the church choir and girl scouts. I used to help with the deaf children and it came in handy when I had a hearing impaired daughter. Well, I don't know how things are, but I hold this school very close to my heart. I think a lot of who I am today is because of my teachers and the nuns I spent so much time with.

I can still remember going to the Lyceum for the bazaar each year. Jumping rope in the huge playground, marching in the St. Patty's Day Parade as a Girl Scout. SFX is absolutely the foundation of my journey with the Lord. Thanks!

All of the teachers at SFX are very skillful and are interesting in what they are saying and teaching, and in a few years I will be able to go to high school will all that I learned in all my years in Saint Francis.

I have so many good memories of St. Francis Xavier School and Church. I would love to get together with my former classmates. Sister Claude Maria was my second grade teacher. I last saw her at my brother Jerry's funeral. Jerry also attended St. Francis and was taught by the Franciscan Brothers.
I remember wearing the SFX hat rolled up (a no-no), but the "cool" girls wore the hats rolled up during recess time and then the pin came off when entering the school building. I cried after graduation, not looking forward to moving on to "foreign territory" - high school. I felt so safe at SFX. I cried so much after graduation - I just know my heart was broken.
Boy, do I miss growing up on Union Street, SFX and all the good times!

Does any SFX student from the forties and/or fifties remember the late great Father John Kean? Later he became Msgr. Kean but for about the first 20 years of his priesthood he was with us at SFX. Even after he left SFX I would visit him in his various parishes and lastly at the Little Sisters in Queens Village where he stayed until he died in June 1999. All during the 60's, 70's and 80's he would visit me in the various parishes where I was stationed in the Albany diocese. What would you think of an annual memorial Mass [like on a Saturday late morning] each June at SFX Church sacred to his memory? Email me if you would like to see it and would make an effort to join us at SFX. /frfr

I attended SFX starting approximately 1945 (was born 1939) and left Brooklyn for a life in Florida at age 12 in 1950. We lived at 627 Carroll St. between 5th & 6th Avenues. The family names were Aiello, Speziale and Digati. I was recently looking though some old "stuff" and found the little first communion book that all Catholic children receive, belonging to my then friend Carol Donato at 676 (?) President St. Is it possible that the church still has contact with some members of her family? I would sure love to get this back to her or her family. I was friends with Lucy Casso, Joyce Montebello, Vivian Cuccurullo, Barbara Hillman (?). Our neighbors that I remember were the Castellano's and the Giordano's (across the street). Well, to my dismay, I am having a senior hiccup and can't remember the others. I hope you can help me with this. Oh, Mary Keegan was in my class. I have my book and am sure Carol would love to have hers.
Thank you for your anticipated help.

Sending me to St. Francis Xavier was the BEST decision my parents made. The caring, dedicated, and motivating teacher are the reason that I choose to consider a career in education. St. Francis is the reason that I always feel at home in Park Slope! St. Francis Xavier changed my life tremendously and helped me to believe that I am able to accomplish any goal I set for myself, and I owe full appreciation to my old teachers specifically Mr. C, who never failed to believe in my intelligence, Ms. Curry, Ms. Glodowski, Ms. Harris, Sr. Margaret, Ms. Coffee, Ms. McNulty, Ms. Dello, Ms. Virginia, are all examples of teachers that give a child hope to exceed to her fullest potential. Thanks for then, now and forever! May God Bless you all!

Hello from Baltimore. I was reading in the Catholic Review the
closings of schools in Brooklyn, NY and was quite relieved to see
that St. Francis Xavier was not among those closing its doors. I was
a 3rd Grade student (1947-48) and made my First Communion at SFX, a
long time ago! My 3rd Grade Nun was Sister Francis Regis and
although I was somewhat of an active youngster requiring a crack on
the knuckles with her ruler once or twice, she did request and enjoy
this 7 year old's rendition of Galway Bay; not bad for a little
Polish-Italian girl! It was a joy visiting your site. God continue
to bless SFX's school and church.
Sincerely
Donna [Derowski] DiPalo
